VERANDAH POLE FALLS

PEDESTRIANS’ NARROW ESCAPE TAXI DAMAGED A taxi-cab suffered when a heavy verandah pole collapsed on the Waverley Hotel corner. Lower Queen Street, this morning. Fortunately the pole fell outward into the street. Had it fallen the other way passersby might have been seriously injured, as the pavement was crowded at the time. Mr. J. H. Hooton, owner of the taxi, was sitting in the front seat when the pole fell. He heard a crash and something struck the back of the car a heavy blow. The upper structure of the car was dented and pierced by the pole, which rolled off and broke into pieces when it fell on to the road. Workmen had moved the pole when laying concrete blocks on the pavement at the corner. It had rusted away at the top and was so insecurely held that a slight movement made it fall.
