To remove any yellow tinge from silk and crepe de chine after wash- j ing. add a dash of methylated spirit to the last rinsing water, which should ' be luke-warm. Roll the material in a clean towel till ready for ironing. Handkerchiefs, trimmings, scarves. | and other small articles will not be- j come discoloured if you use lemon juice. Add the strained juice to about j a pint of cold water, and, after washing the things in the usual way, put them in the lemon water. making sure that it covers them; cover with a plate, and leave till the next day. J Woollies of all sorts are often dis- j appointing, because they look matted and “flannelly" after being washed. To prevent this put a teaspoonful of ammonia in the water. Patterned silks will “get up” nicely j if washed in water that is only just warm. This also helps to preserve the colours. And they should be ironed on the wrong side to bring up the design. Tussore silk, on the other hand, is much improved by being ! passed through a little cold milk, and j after the final rinsing. Not only will it be stiffened and look twice as nice. ! but it will keep clean much longer. When washing sateen or other cot- ' ton goods with a satin finish, rinse in borax water. This will give the material a nice gloss and preserve its freshness. Never use hard water when washing : delicate materials. If you cannot j obtain soft water add a little borax, i I oatmeal or lemon juice to the tap I water, *
