LINESMAN’S DEATH

COMPENSATION AWARDED The sum of £640 compensation and expenses was awarded by the Arbitration Court yesterday afternoon to Ruth Booker Thomson, widow of Robert Bruce Thomson, who was fatally injured through falling from a Ladder while erecting telegraph lines in Edendale Road on March 21 last. The award was based on partial dependency, as deceased, who was a Post and Telegraph linesman, had been living apart from his wife for four years and had been paying maintenance at the rate of £2 weekly. The widow, for whom Mr. Robb appeared, stated that she had two children dependent upon her. Two sons, aged 19 and 16, were contributing 30s and 25s respectively weekly. For the Crown, Mr. Hubble argued that compensation must be assessed on the basis of partial dependency, and on this the award should be in the vicinity of £416. The court, however, decided that the basis of dependency was higher than that suggested by counsel, and fixed compensation at £640, including funeral expenses, and allowed £lO 10s costs.
