AUTHORITY QUESTIONED
NEWMARKETS NEW SHOPS Some discussion took place at last evening’s meeting of the Newmarket Borough CounciF concerning a complaint by Mr. C. Jacobsen. The writer stated that it had come to his knowledge that the building inspector had given a permit to Mr. Miles J. Cassidy to use the boundary wall of his block of shops in Kemuera Road as part of the construction of Cassidy’s block of nhops, and he protested against such Unusual procedure on the part of the inspector. Several councillors immediately questioned the inspector’s power in such a direction, but the Mayor remarked that possibly there were certain conditions <xr causes for such an action. Or. Wickerts viewed the action as though one man was relying solely upon the strength of his neighbour’s wall to hold up his own lighter erection. Cr. Mason considered that such action could be settled only by agreement between the parties concerned, apart from official sanction. Cr. Michaels: Otherwise Jacobsen may have a case against this coun-
Cr. Newport suggested the supply of a definite report from the inspector, when possibly a different complexion would be placed upon the subject. Arguments were fairly ardent against the position as it stood, but it was readily conceded that the inspector was highly qualified and well able to identify the extent of his authority. Finally it was agreed that the subject should be fully investigated by the general purposes committee, and reIperUid upon at the next meeting.
