LIDO SPEED BOAT RACE
SEGRAVE AND GAR WOOD TO COMPETE AGAIN POWERFUL RACERS British Official Wireless RUGBY, Tuesday. Sir Henry Segrave has arrived at Venice. He is to compete in a motorboat speed contest off the Lido. He has with him two boats—Miss England and Miss London. With Miss England Sir Henry defeated Gar Wood, American speedboat champion, at Miami, Florida, early this year. Gar Wood will also compete at the Lido. He will use a new motor-boat which is an unknown quantity, hut its power is admitted to be very much greater than that of Miss England. An Italian boat Italia, which has engintes that develop more than 3,000 horse-power compared with Miss England's 950, is also an unknown quantity. Before Sir Henry left England he said Miss England was of modest power compared with her rivals, but already she had done speeds of more than 80 miles an hour and, owing to her twin rudders, her cornering was very fast. Power was not everything. ITALIAN WINS (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 12.30 p.m. VENICE, Wednesday. Sir Henry Segrave’s Miss London retired after the second lap in the Prix de Venice speed-boat race, in which there were six starters. The winner was the Italian, Montelera, who attained a speed of 51 miles an hour.
