MAORI BOTANY

NO VARIATION IN NAMES AN INTERESTING STUDY (THE SU2PS Parliamentary Reporter) PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Tues.

Maori botany was brought up in the course of the debate on the Native Estimates by Mr. K. S. Williams (Bay of Plenty), who suggested to the Minister of Native Affairs, the Hon. Sir Apirana Ngata, that in the economic survey of the native race, for which £ 100 is to be devoted this year, he should include as a subject for investigation the Maori naming of trees and plants. He said that though tribes and dialects had varied throughout New- Zealand, the nomenclature of trees and plants had shown surprisingly little variation. The names were the same for practically the whole of the Dominion.
