PLUNGE TO DISASTER
PLANE SMASHED AGAINST PRECIPICE WRECKED AIR-LINER (Australian and N.Z. Press Associationi SAN FRANCISCO, Monday. Details of the disaster to the transcontinental air liner City of San Francisco in New Mexico show that the machine first struck the top of a. pine tree 60ft from the ground. The left motor struck a tree and then tho airplane reeled against the face of a rocky precipice, swung sideways, and for another 100 ft plunged downward breaking off many trees and literally uprooting others. The debris lay scattered over an area 150 ft square. There was evidence of an explosion of petrol, several trees having been seared by scorching flames. Every piston was torn from one of the engines of the machine and the steel cabin was melted down by the intense heat. The five passengers were all hurled together into the front of the cabin when the crash came. Drenching rain probably prevented a serious forest fire following the explosion.
