TWO CAUGHT IN HOTEL
CONSTABLE ON THE TRAIL From Our Own Correspondent WHANGAREI, Today. At the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court yesterday. before Air. G. N. Alorris. S.M., Noel Bateman, aged IS, and Edward Vail«, were charged with being on licensed premises after hours. Constable Sutherland said, in evidence. that he noticed the two accused going toward, the Settlers* Hotel at about 10.30 p.m. Bateman entered. aArd when Vaile noticed the constable approaching, he entered quickly. and they both disappeared out of the back door. Later he interviewed Bateman, and took a. statement from him. in which Bateman admitted that he went to the hotel for the purpose of getting beer for Vaile. In evidence. Bateman said the constable frightened him into making a statement, and that he only went to the hotel to see if the proprietor could give him any work, as he was a taxidriver. The magistrate said he was not prepared to believe Bateman, and convicted and fined him 30s, with 10s costs. JTe did not think he could give Vaile the benefit of the doubt, and treated him in the same way.
