EXPLANATION WANTED
HOSPITAL CHAIRMAN’S REMARKS MAORIS IN PARLIAMENT An explanation is wanted by the Akarana Maori Association from Mr. Campbell Johnstone, chairman of the Waikato Hospital Board, for remarks he was reported to have made regarding native members in Parliament. “'Jj'ATIVE members in Parliament should be elected Jry the Kuropean vote,” Mr. Johnstone was stated to have said at a conference of hospital hoards In Hamilton. Other speakers contended that the principle of appointing a Native Minister of the Crown was wrong. The association was the first Maori organisation to object and then Mr. Hemana Pokiha, of Mourea, chairman of the Arawa Development League, voiced the indignation of the Arawa tribe in an eloquent message. Last evening members of the association approved the request for an explanation from Mr. Johnstone. The association at present does not understand the exact meaning of the chairman’s remarks. The association, at the suggestion of Mr. Patrick Smyth, decided to send its agreement to the Arawa League on the opinion given by that organisation, which is a new body formed to guard Maori interests.
