AIRPORT FOR LYTTELTON

HARBOUR BOARD’S PROPOSAL GOVERNMENT HELP WANTED (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Today. The Lyttelton Harbour Board has decided to take steps to enlist the support of the Government in the establishment of an airport on some of the reclaimed land In Lyttelton Harbour. In his report to the board, the chairman. Mr. H. Holland, M.P., said that practically all the other ports and centres In the Dominion were moving in the matter of providing airports, and although Lyttelton was separated by the port hills from the main land-ing-ground at Christchurch he thought a landing-ground at Lyttelton would be necessary and would become more so. Mr. Holland suggested that the board should communicate with the Government with a view to arranging for a landing-site on the reclaimed land at Naval Point. In reply to a question the chairman said there were 58 acres available at this spot which were of no use at present. The secretary, Mr. C. H. Clibborn, said the shape of the area could be made suitable for an airport. Tbe report tvas adopted.
