TAKAPUNA’S PROGRAMME
LESS RELIEF AS WORKS PROGRESS OVER £6,000 SPENT In Takapuna Borough over £6,000 has been spent out of the unemployment relief loan. The chairman of the Works Committee, Mr. J. W. Hayden, announced this to the council last evening. Figures showed that the footpaths set down for work in the original schedule under the loan had been completed, with the exception of 11 streets. Over 22 miles of paths had been formed. To conserve funds for the completion of the work it had been necessary to stand off 82 men, and only 16 of tbe casual workers were now engaged. They would be retained to tar and sand the new pavement surfaces. and the work would be completed by March 31 next year. The whole of the original schedule would be carried out. The attention of the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, is to be drawn to tbe distress which will be caused with the progress of the programme. The Auckland Hospital Board wrote enclosing a copy of the letter received from the Prime Minister in reply to a protest against the expenditure of great sums yearly in unemployment relief. The board asked for information concerning the amount raised in Takapuna by loans and other means for relief in the past five years. The board asked if the amounts carried Government subsidies. The information will be sent to the board.
