INJURED BY SLING
WATERSIDER CLAIMS COMPENSATION JUDGMENT FOR PLAINTIFF Injured by a descending sling while unloading the steamer Golden State at the Central Wharf, Charles Boys, a watersider (Mr. J. J. Sullivan) sought compensation from Leonard and Dingley, Limited (Mr. Hore) in the Arbitration Court yesterday. The defendant company had paid compensation at the rate of £3 8s 5d a week from January 28, 192 9, the time of the accident, until May 27. Plaintiff asked that the payment be continued up to the present time, and for such further compensation as the Court considered reasonable. Plaintiff said he had been able to earn good money on the waterfront before January, though he had had an accident in 1911. Evidence that plaintiff, who was GO years of age, was suffering from osteoarthritis of the spine was given by Dr. S. A. Bull, who said that in his opinion the accident last January had aggravated the position. Other evidence was given to show that had it not been for tho acicdent in January, plaintiff would have been able to continue work for a few more years. For the defence medical evidence was called to say that the effects of the last accident had now passed off and plaintiff could resume work. The Court gave judgment for plaintiff for full compensation for IS months as from the date of the accident, credit to be given for the moneys already paid, and for costs and witnesses’ expenses.
