THE AMATEURS The Manukau Amateur Cycling Chib was fortunate in being favoured with perfect weather conditions last Saturday afternoon, when a senior 27-mil© race and a si-mile junior time trial were decided. The weather conditions always play an important part, and it was no surprise that the record for the former distance was flowered. The first junior time trial honours went to C. Yule, who downed his rival. E. Hall, by ISsec. Y’ulc demonstrated his ability as an unpaced rider, putting plenty of dash into his work. Although slowest time was returned by W. Paul, he was the winner of the sealed handicap, which is run in conjunction with the time trial. He von only by the narrow margin, of 2sec from J. Shepherd, a newcomer. E. Avery (7min.) proved himself a form rider! The week previously he was downed by A. V. Reed after a good finish. Avery has only started three times to date, for a Win, a second and an unplaced. He certainly was not trying to make a spectacular finish, for he romped home with 57sec. to spare. A first-year senior rider. G. Whitehouse (smin.) gained second place. This is his first success this season. After his good showing in the 53A mile handicap. held recently, he was ticked off by many to be in the firing-line soon. He certainly bore out that judgment last week. L. Aldred no doubt thought that his sprinting ability would stand him in good stead in heading off Whitehouse in the final sprint. However, Whitehouse refused to go under by a bare length. It was the only fault Aldred made in letting the former get such a big break. A return to his old form was evident when Jack Wade clinched fastest time honours, and incidentally the record for the Tamaki journey. Too much success has not come Wade’s way lately. The outing should help him to get fit for the club's 50-mile championship. Another gruelling test will be held j next week, when the club will stage a 53& mile event over the Ihumatao course. The juniors will hold the usual 5 £ mile flutter.
THE. CASH RIDERS The fact that the Budge Challenge ■ Shield was at stake no doubt was the primary factor in such a good field ; lining up last Saturday when the ! Auckland Cycle Club staged a 30-mile i heat. Conditions were ideal. The only withdrawals during the race were three competitors who had an accident. , It was certainly a. tribute to the fitness I of members of the club. R. Clarko (6min.) followed up his second last week by annexing the shield. He was certainly \ cry pleased with himself when Mr. IT. Edwards, a keen supporter of the club, presented the coveted trophy to him. It is undoubtedly one of the finest shields in tlio cycling sport. Clarke should indeed be very proud of his well-earned victory. Another Papakura man. \V. Francis, filled second berth. This is his nearest placing this season, his only other placed performance being on August 10 last, when he was third in a 19.4 mile race. A win for him is due shortly. C. Slack completes the placed division. Good team work by Papakura men was in evidence, as Slack also hails from that district. This is his first placing. He certainly deserved it. for he took his laps very willingly. Fastest time was divided between the scratch pair. Jim Tlarcourt and .Tim Lindop. Harcourt has improved considerably of late. To tie with the club captain was no mean performance. Never in the history of the club have so many close finishes been in evidence. This is due to the good work of Handicapper George Knight. About a mile and a-half from the finish, there were two bunches of 12 riders in all. Had not three of these fallen, at least seven would ha\e been fighting out the finish. This clearly demonstrates the ability of this official. A word of thanks must be given by the professional club to their brother members, the Amateur Cycling Club. There is a splendid code of good-fellow-ship existing between the two brancheof wheelmen in this city. The latest action of the amateur club .n putting their big classic forward so as not to clash with the professional run from Hamilton is a sporting one. and one much appreciated by officials of the cash riders. Next week's event will be over three laps of the Mangere circuit. A good entry is anticipated. With fine weather.' fast times should be recorded. The last winner over this distance was TX Storey, who won the event on August 10.
