The Alanunui Pigeon Club flow tho first race of its old-bird season on Saturday for a trophy presented by Mr. Aloud. Tho race, from Alarton, re-* suited:—R. Reynolds, who has been shift-clerk at the Taumarunui railway station for the past four and a-haij years, was tendered a farewell at a meeting of the railway employees, over which the stationmaster. Air. A. J. Arthur, presided. Air. Reynolds, who has been transferred on promotion to Hamilton, was presented with a handsome clock, and Mrs. Reynolds with a jardiniere. Tho Alanunui Town Board s traffic inspector, Mr. J. W. Whittaker, recently applied for an increase in his annual remuneration, and for permission to prosecute offenders against the by-laws direct, without having to lay informations with the board for decision. It was resolved to grant an increase in salary, but the board decided that it would continue to consider offences as heretofore. Air. Hardy, of Taumarunui, who represents the Union Atlantic Oil Company, recently made a. visit to the Kawhia district in connection with oil research. Air. Hardy stated that satisfactory indications of the presence of oil had been discovered, but was reticent about the exact locality of the operations being undertaken. The presence of petroleum in this locality has been known for many years, but hitherto no special investigation of the position has been made. The AVellington footballers were entertained during their stay in Uiia district After the big match on Saturday they were tendered a dinner at Aleredith House, Air. A. E. Rice, president of the Taumarunui Rugby Union, presiding. Air. Rice mentioned that the AVellington Union had paid its own expenses in sending the team up, in order to assist a weaker body. On Sunday the visitors were motored to Xational Park, and prior to their departure by the Limited were the guests of Air. and Airs. A. E. Rice. Air. Chaney, captain of the visiting team, said that in his opinion the Taumarunui football ground was one of the best in Xew Zealand, and the people had good reason to be proud of it. He suggested that further efforts should be made to get a match here with the English tourists. * * * The Alanunui Domain Board his completed arrangements for a camping ground for touring motorists, and the Auckland Automobile Association is making the facilities known through its camping booklet. Every effort is to be made to make the ground an attractive stay-over place for passing motorists. • * * The Taumarunui Tennis Club has appointed Sergeant J. O’Brien a life member of the club as a mark of respect for the great interest he took in its affairs while in the Taumarunui police district.
