TRUCULENT PRISONER
MONTH FOR ATTACKING CONSTABLE PITT STREET SCUFFLE Struggling violently and using obscene language, Samuel Robert Campbell was arrested in Pitt Street on Saturday evening for being disorderly while drunk. His conduct resulted in four charges being made against him at the Police Court this morning. a labourer, aged 40, pleaded guilty to being disorderly while drunk, assaulting Constable Mawhini in the lawful execution of his duty, wilfully damaging a shako valued at 15s 6d, and using obscene language. “I want to take out a prohibition order right away,” he said, after pleading. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: It looks as though you will be prohibited for a month anyway.
According to Senior-Sergeant O’Grady, Campbell had been standing outside the Pitt Street Methodist Church, where a wedding was in progress. The constable had moved him on, but he had returned and had to be arrested. He had kicked and bitten the constable, damaging his shako. “Drink was responsible. Let me take out. a prohibition order and I’ll be all right,” pleaded accused. Campbell was sentenced to a month s imprisonment on the assault charge. He was also ordered to pay the amount of damage to the shako.
