NEW BRIDGE OPENED
ACROSS GREAT SOUTH ROAD BOON FOR MOTORISTS The official opening of the new concrete bridge spanning the Papakura stream was performed by Mr. F. M. Waters, chairman of the Manukau County Council, this morning. The bridge completes the five and three-quarter miles concreting scheme of the Great South Road under the jurisdiction of the Manukau County Council, The bridge was erected to replace the narrow Inadequate bridge which had done service for a number of years, but which, on account of the enormous growth of traffic, was a source of great danger. The cost of the new structure has been contributed to by the Main Highways Board, Manukau County Council and Manurewa Town Board. The bridge, which cost approximately £2,800, consists of three 25ft. spans and has a total length of 60ft., with a 20ft. carirage-way, and two 4ft. footpaths, a total width of 28ft. The piers have been built on solid sandstone and the bridge is of the beam and girder type, with the footpath carried on cantilever brackets .It was designed by Mr. J. R. Page, engineer to the Manukau County Council, and construction was carried out by the County Council. The contractors were Willcox and Co., represented by Mr. W. J. Lopdell. The new structure will be greatly appreciated by the motoring public and is a credit to both designer and contractor. Mr. C. S. McCallum is the riding member and was present at the official function.
