CARGO OF BULK OIL

FIRST SHIPMENT FOR COMPANY TANKER SVOLDER ARRIVES With the first bulk oil cargo for the Texas Oil Company, the Norwegian tanker Svoider arrived at Auckland yesterday from San Pedro, and berthed at the Western Wharf to pump the petrol into the company’s new tanks at Freeman’s Bay, this being the first time the tanks have been used. There are four tanks with a capacity of 1,000,000 gallons, and these will be filled from the Svoider. The remainder of the Svolder’s cargo, amounting to 1,000,000 gallons, will be discharged at Lyttelton and Dunedin. None of the cargo will be unloaded at Wellington, owing to the tanks there not having been completed. It was originally intended that the company’s own tanker Ellen Mary O’Neil should bring the initial cargo, but she is the largest oil-tanker in the world and is too large to berth at the oil-discharg-ing wharf at Dunedin. The Svoider is a chartered vessel, but the Texas Oil Company itself has a fleet of 3 8 ocean-going tankers. Formerly the company imported oil to New Zealand in cases from Port Arthur, Texas. This department of the company is being continued, and a steamer left Port Arthur on August 22 with a full cargo of case oil and petroleum products for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Australian ports. Four oil companies now have large tanks at Freeman’s Bay for the storage of bulk oil, the other companies being the Shell Company, Vacuum Oil Company and Atlantic Union Oil Company. ____
