AN ANCI ENT PETERBOROUGH— Prince George has performed a number of public duties this year. He recently visited Peterborough Northants to the foundation stone of a new town hall and open an electric-power station and children’s wing of a war memprial hospital. Peterborough is noted chiefly for its magnificent Cathedral of St. Peter, which stands on the site of a Saxon edifice. It was begun in 1118 and took over a centuey to build. I t contains the tomb of Catherine of Aragon first wife of Henry VIII. Peterborough was made a borough on modern lines, in 1874, having p reviously had its mediæval constitution. It has a population of 36,000. Photograph shows Prince George walking in procession from the old town hall to lay the foundation stone of the new.
AT BISLEY, HOME OF RIFLE SHOOTING—In Surrey, near Brockwood, lies Bisley, famous the world over as the home of rifle shooting. The camp, the ranges and the danger zone behind the targets occupy some thousands of acres. The longest range for shooting is I,2ooyds and the shortest (for revolvers), 25yds. The Bisley meeting each summer is the event of the year for the shooting experts. The most important prize is, of course, the King's Cup. Second in importance is the as Ashburton Shield, which is competed for by the public schools of Great' Britain. Photograph shows a general view of the competition, this year, for the Ashburton Shield. There was a record entry of 75 teams and the victory went to Glenalmond. Many New Zealanders who received military training in England will recall these famous ranges.
