ELLERSLIE GALLOPS
FEW HORSES REQUIRED FOR FAST SPRINTS THIS MORNING’S WORK A number of horses were required for useful tasks on number one grass i track at Ellerslie this morning, but there were few trials of note and the gallops were not interesting. Weather conditions were splendid for the prebreakfast work, but at 7.45 a.m. rain Stt in and continued intermittently throughout the morning s work, making matters anything but pleasant for those interested. Still, all the tracks were in good order, and times could have been improved on in most cases. Gold Money was let oft* with an easy five furlongs, being anxious to increase the pace throughout. Her effort in last Saturday’s sprint at the Pakuranga meeting seems to have improved her more than anything else. The Lover and Alloy, a th'ree-year-old from Wanganui, in J. Williamson’s stable, were partnered for half a mile to return 53, with the former beating his companion by a slight margin. Palmares was restricted to an easy four furlongs, but he was hitting out nicely. Bombarder set off at the half-mile peg to run his last three furlongs in 40. Though Gemlight has done nothing in the way of fast work, he showed that he is coming to hand quickly by finishing up four furlongs comfortably in 54. Vallar jumped away at the half-mile post and ran his first furlong in 13 4-5, completing the journey in 57, obviously not being after time. Onewhero Sprints Well A pleasing sprint was that registered by Onewhero, who had Currajong to assist her over the half mile. The latter was under pressure a furlong from the post, but failed to keep with Onewhero, who ran out a fairly easy winner in particularly good tune — 50 3-5. She was staying on well, too, and a reproduction of this effort in a race would see her in the firing line at the end, that is providing the journey was no further than six furlongs, for Onewhero has never been noted for stamina. A pair of two-year-olds, Ruling King and Dusky Maid, were practically together at the end of half a mile in 56 1-5, while Dave was far from being extended in a spin over the same ground in 55. Bright Land had G. Holland in the saddle for his trip over half a mile, and he was travelling easily at the end to register 53 2-5. On the two-year-old track Grand Spirit (Peach Brandy—Lady Bunyan) covered three furlongs with a fair weight in the saddle in 39. the initial furlong in 14 1-5, while Chansonette (Catmint —Soliloquy) went a furlong farther in 55. Two middle-distance performers, Taneriri and Hyde Park, were sent over a circuit. The fdrmer (scouting on the outer) led his companion in the early stages, but the pair were on terms for the last five furlongs, running home in 1.57. The last mile was traversed in 1.49 1-5, while the final half-mile was cut out in 55 1-5. Tetrarchate and Neil could not be separated at the conclusion of five furlongs in 1.6 1-5, the first furlong in 13 1-5 and two in 25. Golden Wedding wound up six furlongs in 1.23 2-5, and went very evenly throughout. She is in fine order for hurdle events at the Avondale spring meeting. Sir Archie covered seven furlongs in 1.3 S 4-5, but was not hurried. When returning to the stalls he was noticed to be lame. The following horses were worked at a good three-quarter pace over various distances on the grass: Catoma, Wild Country. Good Idea, Thunderstorm, Mana W-henua, Kauri Park, Theodolite, Tambourine, Respirator, Brampton, Restaurant and Sleepy Sol. For several weeks Eager Rose has been out in the paddock, but A. Kemp has recommissioned the daughter of Day Comet, and she was out working usefully on the sand at Ellerslie this morning. Since last racing Eager Rose has grown a bit, while she has filled out in proportion. The long-awaited operation on Branson for respiratory trouble was carried into effect last week, and it is understood that the result is deemed very satisfactory. At present Branson is stationed at Ivlatamata, and providing the son of Grey spear goes along in the right manner P. Scally will again undertake the training of him in about a month's time.
