BADMINTON
FINALS IN TOURNAMENT NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS Attractive doubles play was seen in the New Zealand badminton tournament last evening when Griffiths and Southon defeated their club-mates, Rishworth and Martin, in the championship doubles. This brought Griffiths and Southon into line with Meredith and Austin for the semi-final. Meredith and Austin earlier in the dav eliminated the Ellett Brothers —a match in which Meredith’s short work, was masterly. In women’s events Mrs. Hetley is so far the dominating figure, though the Mangere pair, Miss Ellett and Miss Solomon, won a meritorious victory from Mrs. Hetley and Mrs. Harvey in the handicaps. In the women’s championship double® the way was smoothed for other pairs by the forced retirement of the Misses Waters, one of whom dislocated her shoulder. Among outstanding matches last evening was a great tussle between Meredith and Mrs. Hetley and Ellett and Miss Solomon, the former winning after a second set that was fought to the last point. Another good match was the handicap doubles in which Mrs. Hetley and McLean beat Miss Ramsay and Morrison. The latter pair put up a great resistance against experienced opposition, and the result was in doubt until the end. In the men’s singles Rishworth, failing to show his form of the previous day, was eliminated early by Southon. TODAY’S PLAY Play was continued at 10.30 this morning, and by 3.30 semi-finals had been reached in all sections. The surprise of the play up to that stage was the defeat of Kelly, last year’s singles champion, by Martin, who won the semi-final 15—11, 15—10. Tho winner gave a fine all-round exhibition, and had his opponent making more mistakes than is his custom.
