ASIATICS IN DOMINION
PROFESSIONAL MEN NOT OBJECTED TO MAORIS’ VIEWPOINT The Maori view of the Asiatic social problem was closely discussed last evening by members of the Akarana Maori Association. While speakers agreed on F necessity of restricting the influence oj Chinese and Indians of the marketgardening class, an opinion was given out that no objection was made by Maoris to the presence of Asiatic professional men in New Zealand. The view of the meeting was that the regulating of the employment of Maori women with Asiatics merely touched the fringe of the question. An investigation by the Government of aspects in the suggestion to prohibit Asiatics from New Zealand was considered necessary by several speakers. Attention was drawn, further, to what members regarded as a need for considering legislation to exclude ths present population of Asiatics. It was admitted that no objection should be raised to visits to the Dominion of Asiatic professional men. What was feared by social workers interested in the welfare of the Maori race was the tendency to accept Asiatic market-gardeners as an element of the population of New Zealand.
