RAILWAY POLICY
BIG BRIDGE BUILDING PROGRAMME N.Z. TENDERS ACCEPTED Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. In a statement to tlie Press today the Minister o£ Railways, the Hon. W. B. Taverner, gave some interesting particulars regarding the programme of the Railway Department. The policy of giving New Zealand industries as much support as possible is exemplified by the recent acceptance of tenders for the Ngaruawahia and Whenuakura bridges. Steel plates and shapes to a total weight of 500 tons will be imported from Great Britain, but the whole of the fabrication of the steel work will be done in the Dominion. The successful tenderers are Rope for Ngaruawahia and Bird and Codling Brothers for Whenuakura. In addition to the encouragement of local industry these bridges mark the beginning of an extensive programme of reconstruction of old timber bridges in steel and concrete, to take the heavy type of engine now employed. The Whenuakura bridge is on the Marton-New Plymouth section between Rar.gikura and Patea and the Ngaruawahia bridge crosses the Waikato River.
