NO LAND RETURNS
PAID TAX WHEN NONE WAS DUE PRICE OF NEGLECT It was rsveaied in evidence gainst Frank Ardern at the .■*olice Court this morning on a charge of failing to furnish a re.urn of land that he had been for six years paying on default assessments when he was not liable for any tax at all. A plea of guilty was entered for Ardern, and Air. Ward, for the Commissioner of Taxes, .said that the man had not furnished a return since he acquired the land in 1923. He had been warned several times and paid his tax which amounted to about £6 on default assessments. It was pointed out for Ardern that, as the mortgages on his land were greater than its unimproved value, he was really not liable for tax. “What is the minimum fine?” asked Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.AI. A fine of £2 and costs was imposed. On similar charges Andrew Dow and W. McR. Peacock were each fined £5 and costs. For failing to furnish a return of income, F. Brown and Cyril E. Clifton were each fined £2 and costs.
