SUNSHINE ASSOCIATION

FORWARD MOVEMENT RECORDED ACTIVITIES OF THE YEAR The annual meeting of the Community Sunshine Association, held last evening, decided to send a letter of thanks to the Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, and Lady Alice Fergusson, patrons of the association, for their sympathetic support of the movement. The founder of the association, Mrs. N. E. Ferner, was elected the first life member, and votes of thanks to retiring officers, the ladies’ auxiliary, and the instructors of the various classes, were passed. The annual report stated that the past year marked a definite forward movement in the life and work of the association. The purchase of the Nelson Street property had been completed, and the association’s activities were now carried on in its own building. Considerable improvements had been effected in the building, many of the rooms having been repainted and decorated, the hall altered, and the stage constructed. The gymnasium had been fully equipped, and further improvements were npw under consideration. With the boys’ classes, steady progress had been maintained throughout the year, and instruction had been given in the gymnasium. Boxing had been taught by scientific instructors, and during the summer successful swimming classes were conducted. There had been an average attendance of 80. The teaching of carpentry and ►kindred trades was now being arranged for. The attendance at the girls’ classes had been affected by epidemic sickness in the district, the average attendance being approximately 60, but the standard had not suffered. Classes had been conducted in millinery, raffia, and needlework, folk dancing, and deportment, dramatic work, and singing. Reports were received from other branches of the association’s activities, all of which recorded considerable progress. Officers were elected as follow: President, Mrs. N. E. Ferner; vicepresidents, Sir George Elliot, Sir George Fowlds, Sir Frederic Lang, Sir Edwin Mitchelson, and Mr. John Court; hon. solicitor, Mr. W. H. Cocker; hon. auditor, Mr. H. A. Spinley; hon. architect, Mr. Putwain; board, Mesdames Miller, Pratt, Nielsen, and Cooper, Dr. Ludbrook and Dr. Cooper, Messrs. G. L. Brownlee, A. J. Campbell, O. McBrine, R. Noton, F. Restall, and A. J. Williamson.
