TROTTING TESTS EPSOM WORK TODAY WAS INTERESTING TRACK IN FAST ORDER The speedway at Alexandra Park this morning was in excellent order for “winding-up” tasks and a good deal of useful work was undertaken. the various condidates turning ’on the speed tap to some tune over the last half-mile. The footing was conducive to fast times, and moderates were winding the watch up pretty tight. Uncle Bert (W. Kerr) was the early bird, working two miles before breakfast. He showed plenty of dash when asked for a final spurt. C. G. Lee was also astir before the fans rolled up and gave Nelson Dillon
and Tiger Salve sound tasks, both displaying good form. Katoto (W. Conning) and Sweet Memory (Sam Roe) trotted a mile and a-half without any mistakes. The grey mare, on the outside, appeared to be doing the best of the Takapuna pair. A SOUND EFFORT Explosion (A. Julian), Jewel Pointer (L. Laver), Carmel (J. Shaw) and Warplane (C. Fairman) elected to go
twelve furlongs. The former was given the benefit of several lengths start, and warming up to his work with half a mile covered continued to lead the other three. At the end of a mile Warplane was eased up and Carmel and Jewel Pointer reduced the gap to the leader, but Explosion held on to finish in front. Carmel’s effort was a good one and he finished full of running. Dillon Huon (F. Smith) was allotted strong work over three circuits, but no attempt was made to record a fast half-mile. He is a very fit horse and will be driven by the English reinsman, if his licence is granted in time. Hohora (L. McMahon) and Mountain Dell (A. Bryce) were companions in a bout over a mile and a-half. The former led out and pacing in good style was still in front two furlongs from home. Here the Blue Mountain King mare moved up and doing her work nicely had a slight advantage at the post. Hohoro pleased by his improved display. In Fine Form Native Prince (J. Shaw) was not geared up and after working at a sound clip for a couple of rounds slipped over the last half-mile at a smart rate. First Flight (J. McKendrick) took a hand in the last circuit and showed burst of speed. Polly’s Picture (S. Mitchell) and Goldman (Sam Roe) commenced at the two-mile flag, and worked along in unison for a mile at a useful clip. Goldman then went to the front and urged Polly on for several furlongs, where she eased up, and her companion came home the last half-mile at good speed. The old Gold Bell pacer, who was unhoppled, gave an impressive display. Arachne (J. Shaw) worked solidly over three laps, with the pace increased over the final circuit. The mare looks a bit on the big side for racing. A Good Try-Out Torpedo Huon (L. McMahon) jumped away at the 12 furlongs, and, with a quarter covered at a good bat, was picked up by Gold Jacket (A. Bryce). Torpedo Huon was allowed to make the pace for a circuit, but at the half-mile Gold Jacket improved his position, and infusing plenty of dash into his work, kept his stablemate going right to the box. It was a nice work-out, and demonstrated that Torpedo Huon is coming along all right. Tradesman (S. Roe) stepped along briskly by himself for 10 furlongs, where Margaret Wallace (Ted Sandrall) joined issue and set a merry pace for the old trotter. He was going great guns when he broke, a furlong from home, but recovering smartly finished up the task in good time. The square-gaiters Sebisca, Nebraska, Anseline, Special Bell and Gene Seva were given a number of rounds at a steady rate, but no effort was made to test the electricity of the track Golden Gate was galloped on the sand, and Reynard was restricted to walking exercise. *
