STUDENT REUNION

FAREWELL TO PRINCIPAL Nearly 250 former students of the Auckland Training College attended the annual reunion at the college yesterday, when the presentation of a silver tea service was made to the retiring principal, Mr. H. G. Cousins. The president, Mr. G. S. Coldham, outlined the growth of .the college during Mr. Cousin’s term. He had been responsible for the training of about 3,000 teachers. In the past Mr. Cousins had given great help to the Students’ Association, and it was hoped that he would continue to take an interest in their affairs. A bouquet was presented to Mrs. Cousins by Mrs. Coldham, wife of the president, who acted as hostess. The annual dance in connection with the reunion was held at the college last evening. BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL The Birkenhead Borough Council held its fortnightly meeting last evening, the Mayor, Mr. J. P. McPhail, presiding. It was decided to install 60 discs at Highbury Corner as traffic lines, to replace the present dome. Mr. F S. Dyson, District Public Works engineer, advised that a subsidy of £1 for £1 had ben approved on the Poppy Lay fund of £3O. Dr. Herbert Chesson, district health officer, in granting an application for the installation of a septic tank, urged the necessity of drainage He said. “There is no doubt that if Birkenhead adopted a drainage scheme its popularity would be greatly increased and its progress rapid.” A deputation from the Birkenhead Band waited on the council asking for assistance toward the uniform fund. Mr. V. Queenin, the secretary, said the band had made arrangements to hold a bazaar next month to raise funds for uniforms, but had cancelled the arrangements in order to helfi the council to get a fire brigade.
