FRANKLIN POWER BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Franklin Electric-Power Board, held yesterday, was presided over by Mr. John Dean. Following recent representations from a deputation, the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, advised that the department was prepared to accept the offer of £6,000 for the purchase of the line erected by the department between Bombay sub-station and Pukekohe. The application of the Franklin County Council for the erection of an electric lamp at George Street. Buckland, was granted. The tender of E. J. Williams, of £163 6s. for the installation of the group at McLarin’s Beach. Glenbrook. was accepted. Some discussion arose regarding the inconvenience experienced by farmers on a recent Sunday as the result of power not being available until 5 p.m. instead of 3.30 as stated. The chairman and the engineer pointed out that the supply of power was dislocated as the result of necessary alterations to the main line from Bombay, and that heavy rain delayed the completion of the work by several hours. Reference was made by Mr. H. Wilcox to the fact that a child had recently been electrocuted in another district by coming into contact with a range, and he sought information as to whether there was any danger attached to such appliances. The engineer, Mr. T. R. Overton, stated that in ordinary ranges the elements were securely fastened. and would be difficult to remove. As the case was the first of its kind in New Zealand, he had written for particulars. It was reported that the gross sales for the year ending on March 31 last totalled £54,964, of which sum £124. or .146 per cent., had been written off as bad debts. In his report, the engineer stated that the Te Hihi line had been livened, that Paparata would be tested shortly, and that the Maioro Swamp Road would be livened and house wiring completed next week.
