RECEIPT FOR CASH SALE

STAMP DUTY REQUIRED TRADER FINED £1 (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Today. A novel case came before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court this morning, when James Edward Hoffman, local manager of the Farmers' Trading Company, was charged with giving a signed receipt liable to duty without it being duly stamped. The police said that J. Rigger purchased groceries valued at £4 Is 3d from defendant’s shop, and was given an unstamped cash docket, which in their opinion constituted a receipt. Mr. P. Harkness, for defendant; said his client had been instructed by head office not to give a stamped receipt for cash sales, whether for £2 or over. The word “paid ? ’ was usually written on the docket, which was not intended as a receipt. The magistrate held that the docket constituted a receipt, and fined defendant £1 and costs.
