REPORT ABOUT COUSIN OF DUCHESS THIRD-CLASS ON LINER (Australiayi and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9.15 a.m. LONDON, Monday. Apropos of the story from Australia, that the Duchess of York’s first cousin was a third class passenger on the Orama. the members of the Bowes-Lyon family state that they are not aware of any relative visiting Australia. One member said: —“If she is my sister-in-law, she has not lost six brothers at the war.” A message from Melbourne yesterday said that among the passengers who arrived there by the Orama from England today was Mrs. Marie Evelyn Ernest, formerly Miss Bowes-Lyon, first cousin to the Duchess of York. She was accompanied by two women companions. Mrs. Ernest (the message said) reluctantly admitted her identity, and said she did not want any more publicity than could be avoided. Her health was poor and she travelled third class on the Orama for special reasons. The Duchess’s cousin is the last surviving member of her branch of the family, the report continued. Six of her brothers lost their lives in the Great War.
