70 YEARS OF AGE
RISE OF PETROLEUM INDUSTRY It was on August 2S, 1559, that Col- j onel E. L. Drake "struck oil” in Venango County. Pennsylvania. In those ; early days oil wells were sought with j the r object of obtaining kerosene or burning oils; other products contained in the crude oil, such as naphthas or motor fuels and lubricating oils, being largely run to waste. Today little is wasted —the 70 years of progress having found a use for those products that w 7 ere once wasted. The Pennslyvanian oils are known as “paraffin base crudes,” while those from Californit are termed “asphaltic base crudes.” In the 70 years since Colonel Drake “struck oil” the oil industry has grown to be one of the greatest industries in the world. The Atlantic Union Oil Company, Ltd., obtains its lubricating oil from paraffin base crudes, and its motor fuels from asphaltic base crudes. Petroleum has been known throughout the ages. Fire worshippers used the eternal fires of the Aspkeron Peninsula in their ritual, which were fed by crude oil issuing from the Assures of the rocks.
