MILK WAR

NEW ORGANISATION TO CUT PRICES REDUCED TO 4£d A QUART War has been declared in the Auckland milk trade by the action of a newly-formed distributing organisation which offers to deliver milk to householders for 4id a quart. The established firms will make their annual reduction from next Saturday. Bottled milk is to be reduced from 7d to 6id a quart, while the price of can-delivered milk will drop from 61d to 6d. These firms admit that they expect competition, but say they cannot consider any lowering of prices beyond the usual spring reductions. * The new organisation, which claims to represent a number of associated farmers, has already canvassed a large number of householders offering to supply milk at 4|d a quart. The matter had already been given consideration ;yui would be discussed 1 by the Milk Vendors’ Association tomorrow, said Mr. G. E. Tansley, president of the association, when questioned. He admitted competition was expected, but said he could make no statement as to the attitude to be adopted by members of his association until after the meeting had been held. Other milk suppliers in Auckland are firm in their resolve not to cut prices, maintaining that it will be impossible to supply miik up to the present hygienic standards at less than 6d a quart, at the same time giving the supplier a fair profit and the consumers, good service.
