PERSONAL.—Captain T. V. Hill is still in command of" the R.M.S. Niagara and he has with him the following -officers:— Chief, Mr. N. W. McDonald; second, Mr. R- N. Turner; senior third, Mr. L. B. Ellert: junior third. Mr. ,J. Billiilgham; chief engineer, Mr. D. McCaig. Mr. E. F. Jennison has joined the Kahika as third officer, relieving Mr. R. D. Stewart for holidays. Captain F. W. Collins has been appointed acting master of the Opihi, relieving Captain A. PI. Howie for further instructions. Mr. T. Collins has joined the Wingatui as third officer, relieving Mr. E. F. Rainbow for holidays. Mr. A. Ha-slam, third officer of the Marama, is on holidays at Wellington. Mr. D. P. Merrett was appointed fourth officer of the Manuka recently. The Kaitoke recommissioned on Wednesday with the following engineers:— Chief, Mr. A. ,-S. Ewan; second, Mr. J. C. Deer; third, Mr. T. H. Downes.; fourth, Mr. G. Loader. Mr. A. Sadler lias rejoined the Katoa as chief engineer, and Mr. W. W. "Burgess has been appointed sixth engineer of the Wahine. with Mr. C. A. Tilleyshort as seventh. SURREY AT PANAMA.—The Federal line steamer Surrey* which sailed, from Wellington for London on August 1, is reported to have reached Panama last Thursday COAL FROM QUEENSLAND. —An expected arrival at Auckland on Wednesday is the Union Company’s collier Kaiwarra from Gladstone, Queensland, with a cargo of coal for discharge at this port. CARGO FROM LON DON.—Under charter to the Commonwealth and Dominion Line the steamer Malakand is reported to have sailed from London for Port Chalmers, Lyttelton and Melbourne last Friday. PORT DUNEDIN AT PANAMA.—Reported to have reached Panama last Thursday, the Commonwealth and Dominion Line motor-ship Port Dunedin is en route from New Zealand to London. She was dispatched from Wellington on August 2. PIRI FOR NOUMEA AND BRISBANE. —The Nobel Explosive Company's auxiliary schooner Piri is announced to start loading general cargo for Noumea and Brisbane on Wednesday. The vessel is at present at North Wall completing her annual overhaul and survey. HU IA DUE TOMORROW.—Mr. C. E. Campbell advises that the Nobel Explosive Company's auxiliary schooner Huia is expected to reach port from Lyttelton tomorrow. After she has discharged her cargo the Huia is to load timber for SydTAHITI AT WELLINGTON. With passengers, mails and cargo from San Francisco, Papeete and Rarotonga, the Royal Mail liner Tahiti arrived at Wellington at 5.30 o’clock this morning. She Is to resume her voyage to Sydney tomorrow afternoon. RIMUTAKA DELAYED. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Rirautaka sailed for Wellington on Saturday morning, in continuation of her voyage from London, but she returned to port in the afternoon to effect repairs to the high-pressure cylinder of the port engine. The repair work was completed while the vessel was alongside Queen’s Wharf on Saturday night and she resumed bet* voyage early yesterday morning. After completion of discharge at Wellington the Rimutaka will load for her Homeward voyage at Oamaru, Timaru, Lyttelton and Wellington, in that order. MOST POWERFUL TUG YET BUILT. —There was recently delivered to the South African Government the new tug Sir William Hoy, which is tie largest aDd most powerful tug in the world. She was built by Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and Company, Limited, and has a length of 171 ft, a breadth of 31ft a moulded depth of 17ft Gin, and a gross tonnage of 766. She is propelled by two of vertical triple-expansion engines of 3,500 li.p. The arrangements for berthing the officers in the deck-house and the crew below are of the highest class, bathroom and dining-room bein<>provided and berths fitted with electric fight, cooling fans, and every appliance for their comfort. On the voyage from the Tyne to Natal there was a crew of 22 11 of whom were South Africans—consisting of captain, three officers, three seamen, three engineers, three greasers, six firemen, a cook, and a steward, and a representative of Messrs. Armstrong, Whitworth. CANADIAN CONSTRUCTOR IN PORT.—An arrival in the stream at about 4 a. m. today was the Canadian National Steamships vessel Canadian Constructor, from Montreal. She berthed at Prince’s Wharf at about 8 45 o’clock to unload 2.500 tons of general Canadian cargo here, and proceeds to Australian ports to complete. The vessel loaded at Montreal only and cleared there on July 17. With the exception ol a call at Balboa for bunkers, the Canadian Constructor made a direct passage to Auckland via the Panama Canal, which she cleared on July 30. Moderate weather was experienced until seven days ago since when she has been contending with continuous head winds and heavy seas About August 5 the Canadian ‘Transporter, en route from Auckland to Montread, was passed making for Callao, Peru with two of her propeller blades off intending to dry-dock there for refitting of new blades. MANUKA AT MELBOURNE.—CabIed news has been received by the Union Company that the Manuka from Wellington arrived at Alelbourne at 6 p.m. on Thursday. She is scheduled to leave Alelbourne again at 10 a.m. Wednesday for Bluff, Dunedin, Lyttelton and Wellington. BRUNSWICK ARRIVES.—The eleetricdriven tanker Brunswick arrived in the stream at Auckland at 10.30 a.m. today from Los Angeles, and later berthed at the Western Wharf to unload the local portion of her bulk oil Tomorrow she proceeds to Wellington, thence Melbourne and Sydney to complete discharge. She is under the agency of the Atlantic Union Oil Company. TAINUI'S ALTERED ITINERARY The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company advises that the itinerary of the liner Tainui has been altered. The vessel now leaves Lyttelton today for Port Chalmers: thence Timaru to complete discharge of her London cargo and to load for her homeward voyage. From Timaru the vessel proceeds to Lyttelton; thence Nap ter and Wellington to fill up and is scheduled to sail finally from Wellington on September 18 for Southampton, and London via Panama. STRANDED STEAMER CELTIC.— Arrangements have been made bv tb* Hammond Lane Foundir, Dublin.’ with the Salvage Association for the purchase of the hull and cargo of th« White Star liner Celtic, 21.179 ton* which grounded several months ago on Calf’s Rock, off Queenstown. It is estimated that the work of removing the hull from the rocks will take about thro* years, as the period of operation is limited to months from May to September. The most valuable of the ship’s fittings and much of the cargo hate already been removed. HOKIANGA is due from Hokianga this afternoon, and is to leave on the return trip at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. KAITOA is due at Onehunga on Saturday to load for Nelson and MotuekP. Messrs. Russell and Somers are the vessel’s local agents. NOAPUHI is to be dispatched for Plymouth at three o’clock this afternoon.
