Detective’s Heroic Duel

Press Association • (United P.A.—By Telegraph Copyright) Received 9.10 a.m. SHANGHAI, Sunday. rIE most courageous single action in the history of the Shanghai Police occurred today when Detective Moir, singlehanded, engaged seven of the worst type of Chinese kidnappers in one of the most thrilling pistol battles in this “pistol-ridden” eity. Moir, wearing a steel vest and carrying a bulletproof shield, climbed a narrow staircase amid a fusillade of shots, reaching a tiny attic where the gang was barricaded. Smashing the door. Moir fought seven armed men, killing three outright, fatally wounding two and capturing two. Fifty-seven shots were fired during the fight. Moir escaped with a slight wound in his shoulder. A wealthy Chinese merchant, who had been kidnapped, was released.
