BEDROOM SCUFFLE
LIVELY TIME IN NEWTON BOARDING-HOUSE GAOL FOR AGGRESSOR Lively pictures of a scuffle in the landlady’s bedroom of a Newton boarding-house were sketched at the Police Court this morning when Archibald Chester was charged with assault. Chester, alias James Phillip Hooper, a miner, aged 24, pleaded not guilty to a charge of assaulting Desmond Francis Cook on Saturday. According to Mary Porter, the proprietress of the boarding-house, she had caught another man at her box in the bedroom. She had called out to Cook for assistance and Chester had also come striking Cook twice and scuttling on the floor with himThe dispute was over the theft of some money. Chester: You are a stranger to the truth, Mrs. Porter. I was never Iu the bedroom, but you swore you could get enough witnesses to swear my life away. Cook, the mam assaulted, said that Chester had rushed the bedroom door and knocked witness dovti, striking him twice. The man was under the influence of liquor. In the opinion of Perclval Richard Rainbow, Chester had struck Cook more than twice. Chief-Detective Hammond said that Chester had been three times convicted of assault. He had recent'— served a term of a month’s imprisonment.
