NEW GOVERNOR-GENERAL
COMMANDER KENWORTHY MENTIONED (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 11.53 a.m. LONDON, Sunday. Rumour mentions the name of Commander Kenworthy as a likely successor to Sir Charles Fergusson, Governor-General of New Zealand. Commander Kenworthy declines to confirm or deny the statement.
Lieutenant-Commander the Hon. Joseph Montague Kenworthy is the eldest son and heir of the ninth Baron Strabolgi. He was born in 1886 and entered the Royal Navy in 1902, retiring with the rank of lieutenant-com-mander in 1920. During the war he commanded H.M.S. Bullfinch, later being transferred to the Admiralty War Staff. In 1918 he was assistant Chief of Staff at Gibraltar. On his retirement he interested himself in many activities connected with the sea and with politics. From 1919 to 1926 he represented Central Hull as a Liberal and, after joining the Labour Party in 1928, was re-elected to the same seat in the Labour interest. Since 1920 he has been president of the United Kingdom Pilots’ Association and chairman of the Radio Association of Great Britain and Ireland. He has published two pamphlets on political subjects.
