UNITED STATES TARIFF
REVISION BY THE SENATE COMMITTEE 360 ALTERATIONS PROPOSED (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) WASHINGTON, Monday. The revisions made in the Tariff Bill by the Finance Committee of the Senate were published today. The Republicans carried about 360 increases and reductions in rates as compared with those adopted by the House of Representatives. The measure will be considered by the Senate on September 4. The more important changes made by the committee in the rates included the restoration of the present 31 cents duty on raw wool, which the House had raised by 3 cents a lb., and increases in the wool waste duties. In proposing the elimination of the increased duty on raw wool voted by the House the committee has readjusted downward the duties on all woollen manufactures except a few, such as wool waste, which are given substantial increases, and eucalyptus oil, which it proposed to free from the 25 per cent. duty. The committee leaves the duties on the following at the same rates as fixed by the House: —Butter, 14 per cent.: hides, 10 per cent.; wheat, 42 cents a bushel; beef, 6 cents a lb: sheep, 3 dollars a head; hardwood, 15 per cent.; cheese, 8 cents. In regard to sheepskins the committee fixes a duty of 10 per cent, compared with 25 per cent, proposed by the House. Fresh fruits are listed at 40 per cent, compared with 35 per cent, in the House’s schedule.
