“BORN LAZY”
PREFERS BED TO SEEKING WORK GAOL FOR THREE MONTHS Arrested at two o'clock this morning on his mother's doorstep, Joseph Merrick was described by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court as “born lazy.” jVTERRiCK, a middle-aged man of unkempt appearance, pleaded not guilty on a charge of vagrancy. According to Constable Jones, of Freeman’s Bay, Merrick would not look for work. “He took a room on College Hill, but had to be put out as he refused to get out of bed and look for work,” said the constable. “He is too lazy to wash himself. His mother and his sister can do nothing for him, and he won’t go to Jasper Calder’s mission.” The Magistrate: He won’t do anything: he is born lazy. I remember seeing him here lots of times. Merrick: I would do the work if I could get it. The Magistrate: You will certainly work for three months. Sentence! of three months’ imprisonment was imposed.
