MrAl. K. Bev-in. of Hamilton, is staying at the Central Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. X. T. Mcßae, of Auckland, are at present visiting Sydney. Mrs. Tarrant-Hoskins, wife of Hr. j Tarrant-Hoskins, of Russell, is a guest at the Royal Hotel. Miss Marjory Dukes, of Auckland, is spending a holiday with Mrs. J. H. Starnes, at Morrinsville. * * * Mr. and Mrs. E. L. McCarrison, of Sydney, and Mrs. A. Bond, of Hamilton, are at the Star Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. R. Burns, of Auckland, are at present visiting Sydney. They are at the Wentworth. Xew Zealand visitors now staying at the Wentworth, Sydney, include Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Baxter, of Timaru, and Mrs. Russe.ll. of Auckland. Sir Maynard and Lady Hedstrom. of Suva, Fiji, have recently announced the engagement of their younger daughter, Elaine, to Mr. Robert Crompton, junior, also of Suva. Miss Elaine Hedstrom is well-known in Auckland social circles. KING COUNTRY JOTTINGS TWO BIRTHDAY PARTIES Two delightful birthday parties took place at Oliura. At the residence of Mr. and Mrs. 11. Dawber, Miss Brown was the guest of honour, and the hostess saw to it that her guests spent a really enjoyable time. Games, dancing, competitions and a dainty supper comprised a well-arranged programme. Mrs. A. H. Wakeford was the hostess at a party at her home, the event being in honour of Mr. A. Wakeford’s birthday. The proceedings included games, dancing and vocal items, and everyone enjoyed a most pleasant evening. HOCKEY PLAYERS ENTERTAINED Visiting hockey players were entertained at a dance at Taumarunui, after the representative matches on Wednesday. The combined local teams arranged the function, which proved a happy ending to a successful day. The Star Orchestra supplied the music, and Mr. B. Harker was M.C. * * * EUCHRE EVENING A well-attended euchre evening held at Tunanui School resulted:—Women’s trophy, won by Mrs. Deadman, senr.; men’s prize, won by Anderson. The vestry of the Taumarunui Anglican Church has resolved to lend its authority and support to the conducting of a Quen Carnival throughout the district in the near future. The Rev. Mr. Alexander, who has lately been placed in charge of the Methodist Church at Oliura, is taking steps to form a Bible class and a Community Club in the township. It is al-so hoped that sufficient support will be forthcoming to allow of the formation of a theatrical society. m * * The Matiere Junior Football Club conducted a very successful dance in aid of its funds. The music was provided by the Merry Four Orchestra, and as the attendance was large a most enjoyable time was spent by all. ~P * * * A PRESENTATION At the annual meeting of the Taumarunui Bowling Club, the president, Mr. X. Tod, stated that he had a pleasing duty to perform in connection with the departure from the district of Mr. D. Peek. On behalf of the club members, Mr. Todd asked Mr. Peek to accept a fountain pen, which, he hoped, would carry memories of the friends connected with the Taumarunui Bowling Club. Responding, the recipient expressed the regret he felt at leaving the club and the district. w • * FANCY DRESS BALL The annual children’s fancy dress dance conducted on behalf of the Taumarunui Anglican Church, was held in the Theatre Royal, which had been exceptionally well decorated for the event. The children had a real “night out,” and the floor was packed. The grand march, for which the little ones had been trained by Mrs. Leigh King, presented a gay scene. Miss Rita Xaylor contributed a Dutch solo dance that drew enthusiastic applause. Mr. N. Todd was M.C. and the music was provided by the Star Orchestra. After ten o’clock* the floor was given over to adult merrymakers, who spent a very happy time.
