“A LIVE ISSUE!”
MORNINGSIDE TUNNEL QUESTION IN HOUSE (The SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter) PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Tues. When he receives the final report from the committee of experts investigating the Morningside (Auckland) tunnel scheme, the Minister of Railways, the Hon. W. B. Taverner, will make a statement to the House, according to a reply he gave this afternoon to an urgent question by Mr. W. E. Parry (Auckland Central). Mr. Parry asked the Minister whether statements he had made at Tuakau on Saturday last, together with the engineer-in-chief to the Public Works Department, Mr. F. W. Furkert, were to be confirmed or otherwise. Mr. Furkert had stated that the tunnel issue was not a live one, and Was not under consideration by the department. The Minister said that he had seen the statement, but that possibly what Mr. Furkert had had in mind was that the question was not one that was being dealt with by his department. It was under the Railways Department. An interim report had already been received on the scheme, and the final report was expected later, when a statement would be made.
