SETTLING PUMICE LANDS
MATAMATA’S SUGGESTION The utilisation of waste pumice lands and the tariffs were discussed at a meeting- of the Matamata branch of the Farmers’ Union on Monday, Mr. T. H. Prowse presiding. The following resolution was passed: “That this meeting of the Matamata branch of the Farmers’ Union requests the Government to set aside a block of 20,000 acres of pumice Crown lands and to develop them with unemployed at farm labourer’s wages. A commencement to be made with 5,000 acres. If successful the scheme to be continued with further developments on a large scale. We consider this would assist in developing the country and bring in revenue, at the same time assisting to adjust the balance of labour by removing it from congested areas and settling it on the land.’’ With respect to tariffs the following was carried unanimously: “That this meeting is in favour of free trade within the Umpire, but is against a reduction of the tariff on foreign goods. Also, it is not in favour of the preferential railway tariff.”
