WHANGAREI
The final game of the senior competition between Maungakaramea and Portland was played at Rugby Park on Saturday. The ground, which has been in a bad state, was in greatly improved order. However, a strong northerly wind spoiled what might have been a really good game. Kicking was out of the question and play was confined to the forwards for the most part. Maungakaramea scored early in the first quarter when playing with the wind, but Portland failed to open its account in the next quarter. Both teams scored in the last two quarters, Maungakaramea scoring three tries, while Portland obtained two. Among ’Karamea’s back division A. McEennon, B. Morrissey and J. Beehre were prominent. Bain, Finlayson, P. Morrissey, M. Morrissey and G. Childs were the pick of the van. Portland possesses three good backs in Griffiths, Ridings and Redwood, while Swainson, T. Carr and Rata are well worth their places in the forwards. The following Rugby team has been selected to represent North Auckland against Hawke’s Bay on Wednesday: Fullback, Kerr; threequarters, . .Barrach, Nicholls, Waterman; five-eighths, Anderson, Barry; halfback, B. Morresey; rover, Wells: forwards, Harmona, Donaldson, Finlayson, Yates, Rika, Morresey, Wilkinson. The following players have been selected to play a North Auckland Maori team as a curtain-raiser to the Hawke’s Bay - North Auckland match;—Fullback, Storey; threequarters, Hooper, Izzard, Saul; fiveeighths, Cross, Hollows; halfback, Perry (captain); rover Maclcen; forwards, Bindon, Care, Squires, Clotworthy, Halverson, Fisher, Jones.
