BEATEN BY A POINT

THAMES VALLEY GOES DOWN TO WAIKATO (From Our Own Correspondent) PAEROA, Saturday. Only a point separated Waikato and Thames Valley in a fast and lively Rugby match played here today. Waikato won, 12—11, after leading by 12 to 0 at one stage of the game. Thames Valley made a great effort to catch its opponents in the closing stages, and was only one point behind when full time sounded. For the winners. Storey (2), Bayly and Cameron scored unconverted tries. McNeil and Price each scored for the Valley, Rackham converting one try and kicking a beautiful penalty goal. OLD BOYS’ DAY FAST GAME AT SACRED HEART A team of past students of Sacred Heart College caused something of a surprise by beating the school fifteen. 8 points to 3. in the annual match. It was a well-fought, open game, but both teams lost chances of scoring. The college could have been luckier. The old boys opened briskly and a bustling rush brought a converted try. This was followed by a college rally which yielded a penalty, but. before half-time, a splendid passing bout had given the former students a try. Old boys were slightly the better team on the first spell’s play, but the fitter college side gave them qualms all ther second half. It was enjoyable Rugby. Up to the time he received a painful hand injury, Hura. the college captain and fast wing-threequarter, played outstanding. His strong running was impressive. Old boys had an excellent winger, too. in McLeod, who proved himself difficult to tackle. IC Smith, five-eighth, and Scholium, half, were useful backs for the college, while in M. Smith the former students had a five-eighth who was largely responsible for beating the school. He scored two tries. In the forwards, the old boys played a close, hard game which stopped the ball from going frequently to college's backs. S. Smith, Gihooley, Keane, and McVeagh were efficient for the college, and Walsh, Macdonald, Wright and Foley for the old boys. A preliminary game to the day’s match, a. third grade contest between King’s College and School, saw Sacred Heart win by 14 points to 6. The second half was brightly played.
