KEEN DRAWN GAME
SOUTHLAND PLAYS OTAGO GREAT FORWARD MATCH Press Association DUNEDIN, Sunday. 'Vitil the issue in doubt until the final whistle the Otago-Southlund representative Rugby match at Carisbrook was last, exciting and well contested. It was view.l by a crowd o£ about 11,000. The result, nine all, was a fair indication of the merits of the respective sides which on the play of the afternoon were very evenly matched. The weather was ideal for football, and the ground was iri splendid order. A more vigorous tussle between two sets of forwards has not been seen here for some time. Southland had the advantage in weight and used it to effect, although the Otago forwards contested every inch of the way. On the other hand, although Otago showed up well in the loose, frequently there was not enough backing up of the man with the ball. While the game was mainly confined to the forwards the backs of both sides saw a good deal of the ball and showed up in nice passing at times. Otago’s score comprised two tries and a penalty goal, while Southland’s was made up of two penalty goals and one try. A draw, however, was a most satisfactory ending to such a well-contested match. The funds of the Otago Rugby Union have been considerably enlarged as the result of yesterday’s game and the match between University A and ICaikorai on the previous Saturday. The takings for yesterday’s fixture total £720, and for the previous Saturday £750.
