OPOTIKI NOTES
Mr. J. Macdonald, business agent of the New Zealand Railways, visited Opotiki on Friday. He stated that his department recognised the importance of having the railway continued to Opotiki, and added that his department intended to open an office in Opotiki to provide information and to transact business in connection with the Taneatua-Auckland line.
Referring to the Opotiki Chamber of Commerce’s representations that there should be a daily parcel-mail service, Mr. Macdonald said the Railway Department proposed to inaugurate a daily parcel service between Opotiki and Auckland.
This service will be a great boon to the people of Opotiki, who have been greatly inconvenienced through the lack of a daily parcel-mail service.
A reply to representations by the Opotiki Railway League, asking that an amount should be placed on the estimates for the construction of a new road through the Waimana Gorge to replace the present main highway, which will be used in the construction of the East Coast railway from Taneatua to Opotiki, has been received from the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward. His letter reads: “I beg to acknowledge receipt of your request that an amount should be placed on the current year’s estimates for the construction of a new road through the Waimana Gorge. I may say that I am arranging for the question of the provision of a grant to receive the consideration of my colleague, the Hon. the Minister of Public Works, when he is preparing his supplementary estimates for the current year.”
