SACRED CONCERT
TALENTED PRODUCTION A sacred concert of unusual merit was well attended in All Souls’ Church, Devonport, yesterday afternoon, when vocal and instrumental talent from the City and the North Shore contributed to a programme of well-chosen items. The function was organised by Mr. .J. J. Cosgrove, choirmaster, to whom generous tribute was later paid for the excellence of the choir items and the general arrangement of the soloists. The “Credo” and Barri’s “Gloria” were particularly fine, and the Benediction music, Elgar’s “O Salutaris,” and the “Tantum Ergo” (Woltzer) was also ably sung. Among those who contributed were Madame Mary Towsey, who sang “Pieta Signore,” Mrs. Leonard Cronin, who was heard in “Elizabeth’s Prayer” (Wagner) and Gounod’s “Ave Maria”; Madame Cora Melvin, who chose Hahn’s “Ave Maria”; Madame Humphrey Stewart, in “Agnus Dei” (Bizet); Miss N. O’Connor in “Panis Angelicus” (Cesar Franck); Miss Molly Atkinson, in Mascheroni’s “Ave Maria,” and Mrs. O’Sullivan in “O Divine Redeemer” (Gounod). Among the male voices Mr. McGuire was heard in Schubert’s “Ave Maria” with violin obbligato played by Madame Hayward; Mr. Karl Atkinson in the “Praises of God,” from Beethoven’s “Creation”; Mr. Norman Day in “Rabboni,” from the oratorio, “Light Out of Darkness”; Mr. Eugene Casey in Gounod’s “Nazareth,” and Mr. Leo O’Malley in “The Lost Chord” (Sullivan). The “O Salutaris” trio, Madame Humphrey Stewart, Mrs. O’Sullivan and Mr. O’Malley, was well sung. Miss E. Sinclair, Mr. Cyril Towsey and Mr. Leo Whittaker assisted as accompanists. As a result of the concert St. Leo’s School fund will benefit considerably.
