STRUCK OFFICER

UNREASONABLE SEAMAN FINED £2

After quarrelling witU the stewards on the Raranga on Saturday evening, Arthur Aitchison struck an officer, with the result that he appeared in the Police Court this morning. Aitchison, a seaman, aged 31, pleaded guilty to assaulting John Laurenson, one of the ship’s officers. According to Sub-Inspector McCarthy, the man, who was a member of the crew of the Raranga, had returned to the ship after having some liquor. He had had a row with the stewards, who had complained to an officer about him. The officer had gone to reason with the man but he had refused to listen, and committed the assault.

Aitchison was fined £2, in default seven days’ imprisonment.
