TE KUITI NOTES
The annual meeting of the Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce was presided over by Mr. S. K. Craig, president, and there was a fair attendance of members.
In liis report the chairman outlined the chamber’s activities during the year. Chief among these were the successful representations to the New Zealand Woolbrokers’ Association to have the dates of the wool sales altered to suit King Country farmers. A question of vital interest to the whole business community of Te Kuiti was the possibility of the Main Highway Board diverting the main road at Te Kumi racecourse through Oparure to connect -with the present main road a few miles this side of Pio Pio. Although no official statement had been made, it was common knowledge that the scheme was contemplated by the board, and it behoved every business man to strive to prevent this injustice. The chamber’s activity in this direction would have the wholehearted support of the business community. The question of the freeholding of Te Kuiti had received much consideration on the part of the chamber. The excessive values placed “on practically all the sections were having a detrimental effect on the progress of the town. It was the intention of the newly-formed Te Kuiti Freeholding Association to present a petition to Parliament, in order that a revision of the purchase prices be made. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr. K. W. Low; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. Broadfoot, Craig and Hitchcock; auditor, Mr. J. Powdrill; treasurer and secretary, Mr. A. W. Whyte; executive committee, Messrs. A. Sutherland, M. C. Stranger, H. D. Cooper, S. Holah, and D. McCorkindale.
