PRIMAGE INCREASE
PROTEST BY 1928 COMMITTEE A further protest against the proposed increase in the primage duties from one to two per cent has been made by the 1928 Committee, an organisation founded on non-party lines. At a meeting held yesterday, at which th'e chairman of the committee, Mr. A. Spencer, presided, the following resolution was carried: “That the Government proposals to increase the primage duty from one to two per cent, is a step which this committee strongly resents. The already heavy taxation burdens are proving such a handicap to industry that any further increases are considered unwarranted. The committee considers the Government has many other channels open for taxation purposes, especially those municipal bodies and power boards who are engaged in trading enterprises; also, Government departments that are trading and unfairly competing with private commercial firms. These firms are all paying high taxation charges in addition to local rates, and before further drastic taxation is increased the Government should curtail its extravagant and wasteful methods of administration.”
