£96,500 Contract for Massey College
TENDER ACCEPTED AUCKLAND FIRM'S SUCCESS (TUB SUU’S Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Today. A start will be made almost immediately with the erection of the new main college block of the Massey Agricultural College at Palmerston North. The Board of Governors has accepted the tender of the Fletcher Construction Company for the block. It is stated that the contract price for the building is £96,500, which will cover the cost of erection and the heating and lighting. The expenditure was authorised yesterday Mr. R. A. Lippincott, architect for the building, states that the contract covers the erection of a science block. This will contain the lecture and research laboratories and the refectory block, in which will be situated the main dining-room, the students’ common room and staff accom modation. There will be a library In the science building. The new block will also house the Dairy Research Institute which, with limitations, is part of the Massey Memorial College. The building will be 140 ft by 165 ft, and will be three stories and basement in one part and two stories in the other. It will be square in shape, and the upper stories will be built round a light area. Mr. Lippincott says that the style of architecture will be his own. He is not working to any fixed style, but one which best suits the circumstances and is attractive.
