HELPING THE CADDIE
The Royal and Ancient Golf Club, at St. Andrews, is anxious to place caddies on a better footing than has been the case in the past. Previously a caddy could not be more than 16 years old and remain an amateur. If he was older than that, he immediately lost his status, and was classified as a professional. A letter was received this week by the council of the New Zealand Golf Association from the Royal and Ancient Club suggesting that the age should now be raised to 18 or 21, and asking the New Zealand Council's opinion about the matter. It was considered, said the writer, that the ago might easily be raised without infringing in any way the amateur code, and would be all for the betterment of golf. After discussing the matter, tho New Zealand Golf Council decided to reply favouring the age limit being raised to 21 years.
